| The Student
Union at Savonlinna (YLIOPPILASKUNTA, YO-KUNTA) organises different kind of leisure
activities for the students of the Savonlinna Departments. The Student Union also sells
books, dictionaries, paper and all other material you may need for your studies.
Inexpensive student tickets to theatre and gyms are also available at the office. The
Office of the Student Union is located in the premises of the Department of Teacher
Education. (Building A, room 009; open: Mon-Thu, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Fri 10 a.m.-1 p.m.). Membership is compulsory for those studying for Master's or Bachelor's Degree
as well as for visiting foreign students on exchange programmes, such as NORDPLUS, ERASMUS
and ISEP, or on bilateral exchange programmes. (The exception are visiting students or
degree students in Licentiate's or Doctor's degree programmes who can choose to become
members by paying the Student Union membership fee, provided that their period of stay at
the University of Joensuu is at least three months.) See Chapter on Studying at University

There are four sub-sections of the Student Union in Savonlinna. The
School of Translation Studies has one, called Lingtwisti; and the Department of Teacher
Education three: Pedary for the future teachers of primary/ lower secondary school, Sulo
for prospective kindergarten teachers and Kotex for those studying Domestic Science and
Textile Work.
The Student Union and its sub-sections organise different kinds of
activities for students (sports, parties, trips etc.). You can also order books and
dictionaries through Lingtwisti for a reduced price (Lingtwisti office C 318).
All members of the Student Union will receive a student card. You
can apply for the card when you have paid the membership fee and registered at the office
of your department (please take one photo with you). Your student card is also your
library card (of the University Library), so do remember to keep it always with you.
Discounts with the Student Card (OPISKELIJAKORTTI): Please note that
the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) does not entitle you to the discounts
stated as follows.
1) Discount (EUR 1,85) on meal prices in all campus cafeterias and in
other university cafeterias in Finland
2) 50 % discount in the prices of return and on one way -train tickets
3) 50 % discount on coach fares (the travel distance at least 80 km)
4) Inexpensive domestic/international flights
5) Inexpensive dental and medical care.
6) Student discount in various other places (e.g. pharmacies, swimming pool, gym,
concerts, theatre, youth hostels etc.). |
