University Library and Computers/ Faxes

Students have the right to freely use the libraries of all Finnish universities. The university libraries in Finland co-operate by having a common database from which books can be searched and ordered to be borrowed.

In Savonlinna, the academic library operates in connection with the departments and the university. Its task is to arrange library and information services for the university itself and for other bodies in the area requiring services. The library is open to the public but it is mostly used by students and researchers. The staff of the library answer reference inquiries from the users and undertake bibliographic searches at request.

It is possible to borrow/ read books, newspapers, magazines, and scientific journals in the library. In addition, electronic databases can be searched; word processing and Internet facilities are available. The lists of volumes are in computer readable form only. Borrowing books from the university library is free of charge. There are some fees: for example, if you fail to return books in due time, or if you order books from other libraries in Finland or abroad. The staff advises on the services available.

Open: Mon –Thu, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Fri, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tel. 5117 774.

The students of the Savonlinna campus can freely use the computers in the library computer room (C 106) and in the other computer rooms (A 227, A 301, C 220); the most common text processing programmes are available in English. Disks are for sale at the Office of the Student Union. The students have access to Internet, and can obtain own E-Mail addresses; contact ‘ATK-keskus’ (Computer Centre, room A 215). In addition, computer advice is available for students at certain times in computer rooms (ask for contact hours of the ’Help Desk Officer’, usually in the afternoon in the computer room, A 301 in the Department of Teacher Education).

Private faxes can be sent from the Office of the Student Union. Students have to pay for the faxes sent; students may also receive faxes there but only after 2 p.m. (ask the sender to fax it after 2 p.m. Finnish time, Mon-Fri). Student Union fax +358 15 532 019.

Photocopy and telephone cards can also be obtained from the Office of the Student Union.
