In Finland,
health services for university students are provided by the Finnish Student Health Service
FSHS (YLIOPPILAIDEN TERVEYDENHUOLTOSÄÄTIÖ; YTHS) www.yths.fi.
The FSHS has a full range of medical services including preventive health care, medical
care, mental health care and dental health care. Members of the Student Unions are
entitled to use the services of all the 16 FSHS health centres in Finland. The university's own GP (general practitioner = doctor) practises in the
Students' Clinic ( in the Department of Teacher Education) twice a week. Furthermore, FSHS
nurse is on duty from Monday till Friday. A small fee is charged for the services of
specialists and for dental care.

The Student Health Service recommends that international students
take with them a vaccination certificate (the International Vaccination Card, yellow). If
an international student is planning to visit Russia or the Baltic Countries, it would be
advisable to have valid vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria and polio. It is also
possible to get all these vaccinations at the Student Clinic in Savonlinna.
If you are an EU citizen or you come from a country which has a
bilateral social security agreement with Finland, visiting a doctor at the hospital, will
cost you the same as for a Finn. European citizens: E
128 form should be acquired before arrival in Finland. University requires the form to
be shown upon registry.
For non-EU-citizens, it is compulsory to have an individual health insurance which covers
the costs of acute illness and injury because hospitalisation is not covered by the FSHS
policy.
We recommend you to take the insurance before your departure. In
addition to the health care insurance, you should have a traveller's insurance covering
your baggage and possible accidents occurring while travelling to Finland and throughout
your stay.
