Cost of Living
At the moment, Finland is not a particularly expensive country to live in. Here is an example of a student's monthly expenses:

Rent EUR 200-300 (depending whether you live in private/ student accommodation)
Food EUR 250
Transportation EUR 50
For leisure time & other costs EUR 100,- (approx.)
Total EUR 550-650

You can easily spend more, depending on your preferences. It is common among the international students to spend all their spare money on travelling in Finland and in neighbouring countries!

To find bargains, you could look for ALE, TARJOUS, ERIKOISTARJOUS -signs which indicate sale or special offers. The flea markets are also worth visiting (cheap second-hand clothes, kitchen ware, books etc.). TOKMANNI (Pilkkakoskekatu 3) is one of the cheapest shops in Savonlinna (household utensils, food, clothes etc.).

Note that it is not customary in Finland to bargain, normal practice is to use fixed prices. Occasionally the shops might give you a discount if the item is very valuable and you pay in cash, but it is rather an exception than a daily procedure.
